During the two years that I’ve been living in Savannah a couple of marathons have gotten my attention, specifically the Charleston Marathon and Charlotte’s Thunder Road Marathon.
At the beginning of October I thought that maybe I could tackle the Marine Corps Marathon and another big race within three weeks. First I thought about doing a marathon in California since I was there with Bobby but then I realized that Charlotte was exactly 3 weeks later, which will give me an extra week to recover.
When I signed up for the Marine Corps Marathon I was thinking I wanted to do it because it was the next big race for me to run in the U.S.A.
Living in Savannah where there’s a big military presence I’ve naturally became friends with a lot of people who serve this country and also with some army wives. I have a lot of respect for them because on my long runs I’ve gotten to know all the sacrifice their families go through so all of us can live in a free country.
Long story short, to me this marathon was a personal challenge but also a way to thank this people for what they do every day.
At the beginning of the year I went to Palmetto Bluff, SC to work with Bobby for a few hours. From the moment we drove into the neighborhood I was in love. Everything is so beautiful and green. There are lakes, beautiful homes, running trails, endless biking routes, a hotel and restaurants… “Why don’t we move here?” I asked. Yes, that’s how much I like it.
After admiring how beautiful that place is I remembered that there’s a half marathon there and I realized right away that I wanted to run it. The whole thing is that I’m training for an Ironman 70.3 so most of my weekends are dedicated to biking. I was already doing the Tybee Island Half Marathon and I’m doing the Publix Savannah Women’s Half so that’s two weekends where I’m not biking as much as I should.
This race recap is not going to be like previous ones, so I hope you enjoy it because this is going to be long and you’ll probably see a bunch of pictures of me 🙂
Since I moved to the U.S.A almost 5 years ago I wanted to run the NYC Marathon. I tried to sign up back in 2010 but it was too late, so I did Chicago and loved it! I loved it so much that as today I’ve finished 5 marathons in 4 states: Chicago, Savannah, Boston, Savannah and yes, NY!!!
